Casie and I met to check out the scenery a few days prior to her engagement shoot and we saw the beautiful fall leaves everywhere you looked. Though between then and the actual day we met up for the photos, there was a storm that took away quite a bit of our leaves and scenery. We weren’t going to let that stop us. We were still able to get some great photos and the love between these two were reflected in those photos. They were fun to work with and we had a great time. I was disappointed to find out that their wedding was in NY and that they booked a local New York photographer to photograph their wedding. We love destination weddings! I can only imagine how special those photos will turn out. We wish them an amazing wedding and marriage.

There are many reasons it’s important to take engagement photos once you make it official. As a couple who likely has never been photographed professionally before, the engagement session is one of the greatest services you and your fiancé can take advantage of prior to your wedding. Some couples may feel it’s a waste of time or isn’t necessary, but there are many valuable reasons why you’ll benefit from utilizing this opportunity.

Establishing a relationship with your photographer before your wedding will make a difference in the outcome of your wedding photos. Spend about an hour or two getting to know your pro, listening to them, having fun with them, and then get photographed. They’ll take note of how you interact with each other, your individual personalities and even your quirks. These details will help them capture moments on the wedding day that are unique to just the two of you.

Loren and Howard at the Club at Morgan Hill

Finally! I’ve been wanting to photograph a wedding at the Club at Morgan Hill for quite some time. Everytime I’m ever there, I’m there shooting a Wedding Film. Loren and Howard hired Bar None to photograph their wedding and I was very excited to do so. While we were at her parents house getting ready in the morning, we were keeping an eye on the local radar because the weather wasn’t looking too promising. It was raining all morning and the percentage for precipitation at the time of their wedding wasn’t in our advantage. One of the girls went to Walmart to buy cute umbrellas just incase. Once Loren and the girls were all done getting ready, we headed to the venue for the ceremony and reception. Unfortunately the rain kept falling right up to the time of the ceremony so we had to bring the chairs indoors. Of course we all wanted the ceremony outdoors, it was still beautiful under the tent. I loved how each chair had green bows. It really made it look nice. Once they said their “I Do’s”, the rain subsided enough that we were able to go outside for the formals. Boy were we happy! Bradley Wilson, Director of the Food and Beverage at Club at Morgan Hill, besides being very nice he was incredibly helpful to us. He gave us golf carts so we could go to one of their most scenic holes. The view was pretty awesome. Afterwards, we headed back to the reception to eat, drink and have a ton of fun.

Jessica and Craig at Stroudsmoor

I had the pleasure of photographing Jessica and Craig’s wedding at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn in Stroudsburg, Pa. Everything was perfect down to the most minute details. The location of their ceremony was Ridgecrest. Its always a beautiful ceremony with that great view. I would highly recommend the Ridgecrest location to anyone looking for an outdoor scenic view during their ceremony. Their reception was awesome! They hired the band Mashwork Orange to keep everyone dancing throughout the night. Well, they sure did just that. Mashwork was great, the fun never stopped! It was my first time working with them but I hope its not my last. Below, I have a few of my favorite photos from throughout the day.

What a way to end my photography year!! I was lucky enough to be the photographer for Lisa and Jamie and their amazing wedding. For anyone who is a baseball fan, especially a Philadelphia Phillies fan, you would have loved every minute of their day. Both bride and groom love the Phillies and they tried to incorporate anything they could of their favorite team into their wedding day. They got ready in a locker room, their first meet was along first base, the formals were on and in the dugout as well as the Phillies locker room, the ceremony was in the Hall of Fame Club, and their reception was in the Diamond Club. They even had Dan Baker, the Phillies and Eagles public address announcer, announce them for their introductions. Oh, and of course the Phanatic made a cameo and made the reception go crazy. Such an amazing day for such an awesome couple!! I have posted a few of my favorite photos from the day.

How to look your best in your wedding photos

There’s no reason to just wing it. Take a few extra measures to guarantee you look your best in photos with these camera-sesh strategies.

Before The Wedding Day

Practice smiling
We know it sounds a little funny, but practice makes perfect, even when it comes to your smile. We want you to look natural — that means be comfortable with your smile and own it. Model and actress Beau Dunn, who works on cosmetics campaigns and TV shows, suggests taping favorite photos of yourself (or celebs on the red carpet) to the mirror and mimicking the poses and expressions. Trust us, the more you do it, the more natural it’ll feel.

Whiten your teeth
A pretty smile will radiate with pearly whites. For a brighter smile that will make you feel more confident, try Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips ($50, Crest.com). For best results, get a professional cleaning to remove plaque before beginning a whitening treatment and use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth two days prior to using the strips.

Get a manicure
That ring deserves to have its picture taken, and you want your fingers to look pretty! Celeb wedding photographer Jasmine Star reminds all of her clients to get a manicure before an engagement shoot.

Do your homework
Ask your photographer for links to their favorite sessions. This will give you an idea of what to expect for your photos (both engagement and wedding).

Decide on a location
“Find a spot that reflects your love and a place where you’ll both feel comfortable,” suggests Star. It could be anywhere. When researching locations for wedding photos, make sure you’re not required to have a permit to shoot there. That could put a constraint on how much time you have and affect your photos.

Have a hair and makeup trial
Do a hair and makeup trial before the wedding day so that you make sure you like the look. Take photos to see how the look translates in pictures. Wear a makeup primer under your foundation to combat extra shine from the camera flash and to keep a matte complexion. Try Smashbox Photo Finish foundation primer ($36, Smashbox.com).

On the Wedding Day

Smile with your eyes
Connect and engage with the camera. It doesn’t matter if you show your teeth or not. Think about the new memories you’re making and even laugh just for the fun of it. It’s your wedding day!

Try the classic red-carpet pose
Another model trick: Angle your body to the camera so that you’re not getting shot straight on (it creates a slimmer profile), put your weight on your back foot and smile. Practice various versions for what works best for you; then make it your trademark. If you feel you have a “good side,” use it!

Make your eyes appear larger
Lean your chin and neck slightly toward the camera, look up to make your eyes appear larger and raise your eyebrows.

Elongate your neck
Elongate your neck by lowering your shoulder toward the camera and lifting your chin up.

Don’t press your arms against your body
Create a small separation between your body and your arms. “This trick not only makes your arms look smaller, but defines your waistline, which makes your torso appear slimmer,” says Dunn.

Hold your bouquet at your hip
You don’t want to look like you’re hiding behind your bouquet or blocking your wedding gown. Instead, keep your forearm at a 45-degree angle to make your body look long and lean.

Jessica & Fred at the Inn at Bally Springs

Jessica and Fred hired Bar None to photograph and DJ their wedding last month. They had a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the Inn at Bally Springs. With the babbling brook running next to the ceremony and the pretty fall leaves, its the ideal place for an outdoor ceremony. It was my first time working at this venue and I hope I get to have many more. The place is gorgeous! Its not for every wedding since its a smaller venue (holds a maximum of 150 guests), but for those of you who have just the right amount of guests, I highly recommend it. Since the reception was at the same place as the ceremony, we had our creative session on site, which made it nice for everybody. Jessica was an amazing bride. Besides being pretty, she also had a lot of willpower. It certainly wasn’t the warmest autumn day. I had a jacket on and i was cold, but I didnt hear even one comment about she being cold. I posted a few of my favorite photos from the day.

Lauren & Brian – Lockridge Engagement

Shooting Brian and Lauren’s engagement at lockridge park could not have gone any better. We lucked out with an October day that had perfect weather; it was just warm enough, with plenty of golden sun, and the beautiful colors of fall. It also didn’t hurt that Lauren and Brian are such an adorable couple! I’m looking forward to photographing their upcoming wedding at Bear Creek in 2013, I’m sue it will be beautiful.

11 not so obvious questions for your Wedding Photographer

Over on Danielle Pasternaks Planning Blog she wrote a post the other day “11 not so obvious questions for your wedding photographer!”

From Danielle’s blog – “As you hunt for your team of wedding vendors, you will find several sites offering you “questions to ask” when it comes to your meetings. They serve as great guidelines but what you really want to focus on is how well you gel. If you get along with your creative pro, you will result in LOADS better results every time. They will enjoy themselves more and you will end up much happier.”

We thought she did a great job of identifying some important questions that aren’t always asked! So we thought we’d go through her questions one by one and give our potential clients the answers. Here they are!

01. Will you be our photographer on our wedding day?
We keep our packages very simple. For Photography Trev has a rate and we have a staff rate. Trev’s rate is slightly more because he is an owner and has higher demand so you pay a slight premium. (Eventhough with all packages Trev still oversees and the editing process on all weddings!) If you book Trev’s package you are guaranteed Trev! If you book a staff package you will know who your photographer is about a month prior to the wedding. During prep regardless you will work with Trev who coordinates staffing and the planning process, logistics, your personalized itinerary and serves as your main contact person throughout the process. When you purchase a “staff” package you will typically know who your photographer is 1 month prior. If you want to meet or speak with your photographer prior to your even in addition to working with Trevor on planning just let us know!

02. What will you wear on our wedding day?
Our staff always comes to your wedding dressed in black on black with the goal of “fading into the background”. We do our job best when we do it un-obtrusively. This is always our goal. As Danielle mentions in her blog, if it’s important to you just let us know. We typically don’t wear jackets over our black button downs, but for the most formal of affairs it’s perfectly acceptable to ask us to and we’ll most certainly oblige!

03. Do you have an assistant and/or second shooter?
Our Photography packages come with 1 shooter. (Film with 2) Excellent distinction Danielle makes between 2nd’s and assistants. We do not use assistants but sometimes for certain weddings we strongly suggest the purchase of 2nd shooters while we always encourage it. There is a cost associated with this because as Danielle clarifies a second shooter is a second professional photographer who works at a professional rate. While we do not make money off selling 2nd shooters we charge what we pay them and they are always staff members who work with us on a regular basis.

04. What happens if you become ill on our wedding day?
Emergencies happen. So we hope for the best while planning for the worst. Rest assured emergency situations are always accounted for and a backup plan is always in place!

05. How long after the wedding will we have to wait to see any photos?
Our sneak peak blogposts are usually available within 3 weeks of your wedding date and posted on our blog and your FB page! Turnaround times for your proof DVD’s vary pending the season. (ask for specific dates) For print orders made online we offer FREE next day delivery.

06. Do you have any backup equipment?
Of course! (And importantly all our gear is insured!) Cameras get dropped, lenses break. These are facts of life. Gotta be ready when it happens!

07. What is your attitude normally like on a wedding day?
It’s important to be reserved and polite. The photographer is not the star of the show, but the person who photographs the stars of the show! Oftentimes we get to know our clients through the planning process and really when the wedding day comes… well we feel like we’ve known our clients forever! This is one of the reasons we love what we do so much.

08. How many weddings/events do you photograph in one weekend?
For Films only 1 per night. For Photography and DJ 2 a night 2 max. We have no plans of “multi-opping” or doing more then we do now. This is the amount we are comfortable with while maintaining our high level of quality and service and for now we plan on staying with what we offer now. (critical to understand for film since once we’re booked…. we’re booked! Popular dates book 1- 1/2 years in advance!)

09. Do you allow other people (guests) to take photos while you are?
We typically have no problem with this so long as it doesnt affect our ability to provide the services we’re contracted for!

10. Is there any additional equipment that you set up during a wedding?

Yes! We always have “rain gear” with us. And some common props. (Although if you have something specific in mind, we talk this over during the planning process and these requests are put onto your personalized itinerary and talked about prior!)

11. Do you have any meal requirements on the wedding day?

While we don’t require a meal (though we certainly appreciate it!) we need to know ahead of time whether or not one will be provided. This information is a part of our online itinerary process!

Meagan and Matt Lockridge Park Engagement Photography

When hired to do an engagement shoot for a couple, as well as be their photographer for their wedding day, it is always an honor to be apart of both special days. The couple has a chance to interact with me and I’m able to share ideas of what works best during my shoots. My goal is always to make people feel comfortable in front of the camera especially for when the big day arrives. Meagan and Matt were such a fun couple to photograph. Their chemistry just made the day flow with such ease. They really are a dynamic couple and it is very clear to see how they fell in love with one another. Below, I have posted a few of my favorite photos from the day.
